Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

3/4 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheese (such as cheddar) or fresh herbs for an extra flavor boost

Instructions

Begin by preheating your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and granulated sugar. Whisk the ingredients together until they are thoroughly blended.

Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, gently work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with small pea-sized pieces of butter distributed throughout.

If you’re enhancing your biscuits with cheese or herbs, this is the perfect time to fold them into the mixture for an extra depth of flavor.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and vanilla extract until well combined. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients, then pour the buttermilk mixture into the well.

Using a fork, gently stir the mixture until it is just combined; avoid overmixing to maintain the light and flaky texture. It’s acceptable for the dough to appear slightly crumbly.

Lightly flour your work surface, and turn the dough out onto it. Gently knead the dough a few times (about 5-6) until it comes together.

Roll or pat the dough to approximately 1-inch thickness. Use a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut out individual biscuits, placing them on the prepared baking sheet with space between each.

Gather any scraps of dough, re-roll them, and cut out additional biscuits until all the dough has been used.

Bake the biscuits in your preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are beautifully golden brown on top.

Once baked, allow the biscuits to cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving to enhance their texture.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 30 minutes | Servings: 12 biscuits

                          - Presentation Tips: Serve the biscuits warm, lightly drizzled with honey or alongside butter and jam for an indulgent treat. For a charming rustic presentation, arrange them in a basket lined with a clean cloth.
